Silver & Gold Christmas Holiday Ornament Wreath

Updated: Dec 21, 2020

This Christmas, I decided to go with a sparkly, metallic, silver and gold decor theme. Being that this is the first Christmas we've spent at home in a decade, I wanted to make the holiday decor feel special by adding a bit of sparkle and shine, while still keeping a classic look.

For years, I have been drawn to versions of Christmas Ornament Wreaths online. Most made with coloured, vintage glass ornaments. While those are stunning, I wanted to keep my colour scheme more muted with shiny metallic neutrals like silver, gold, rose gold and white tones.

As you need around 100+ balls, the cost of Christmas ornaments can get quite high if you don't plan ahead. I ordered most of the ornaments online during the summer, when they are cheaper (ebay is a great option too!) and bought additional filler ornaments at Walmart and Super Store in early fall. As the ornaments were going to be added to a wreath, I purchased shatter proof balls in case any fell off while I was making the wreath. Thankfully none did break, however I'm happy I was prepared none the less.

I opted for a mix of matte, shiny and glitter finish ornaments to add texture and depth to the wreath. You also want to think about ornament shape and size, as you will want to fill-in any holes. I purchased small, medium and large balls, along with a package of small Christmas lights and icicle shaped ornaments to add interest and finish on the top layer of the wreath.

I also bought a 15.5" (39cm) silver ribbon wrapped floral wreath on clearance at JoAnn's last December for a steal at $3.00. I was so happy to find this particular Handmade Holiday Floral Wreath, as I wanted a classic, clean look with no tinsel or branches sticking out, as with other holiday ornament wreath variations.

Overall, this wreath took about 1.5 hours to create, but it will be enjoyed for years to come! It perfectly complements my Holiday 2020 Porch Decor (coming here soon) and Holiday 2020 Outdoor Planters (here soon). Check them out for the full Silver and Gold look!

If you make this wreath, send me a message to let me know what you think, or post a pic to Instagram at #mykuratedlife.

Happy Holidays, and happy crafting!

Silver and Gold Christmas Holiday Ornament Wreath

Materials

1 15.5" floral wreath

12 large gold balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 large silver balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

6 large white balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 medium gold balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 medium silver balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 small gold balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 small silver balls (matte, shiny and glitter finish)

12 small gold light shaped ornaments

Ribbon, to finish and hang wreath

1 glue gun & lots of glue

Step 1:

Heat glue gun and arrange ornaments in colour and size piles beside you. Remove any strings or hangers that may be on balls. Place wreath on a heat proof surface.

Step 2:

With ornaments topper side down, begin to group balls in one area, glueing as you go. It's important to keep the wreath bottom side down while you group ornaments, as you will want the finished wreath to lie flat on the door.

Use different size balls to fill in holes, varying the colours and finishes for visual interest.

Step 3:

Continue to group and glue balls, turning wreath as you go until wreath is complete. Add top layer of accent ornaments (light shaped) to add depth to top of wreath. Fill in any holes or gaps around inside and outside edge.

Step 4:

Cut ribbon, if using to hang wreath. On the average door, wreaths should be hung at eye-level, about 15-17" from top of door to top of wreath.

If not using ribbon, a wreath hook or Command hook for up to 5 pounds will work, depending on the weight of the wreath and ornaments you use.

DIY Notes: You will probably end up with extra ornaments, depending on the size of your wreath form. I put all of the extras (different shapes, sizes and finishes) into two lanterns spaced out on either side of the front door to complement the wreath.
