My cocktail choices tend to change with the seasons. Both the weather and seasonal ingredients influence both the meals I prepare and the cocktails I create. This past winter has been all about the Old Fashioned Cocktail. Currently it's citrus season and I have been playing around with the additional of freshly squeezed blood orange juice.
Old Fashioned's tend to be made with a whiskey, either bourbon or rye. Bourbon tends to have a sweeter, more caramel flavour. Rye, especially those that are higher grain content ryes, tend to be more savoury. My preference lately has been to use Sazerac Rye, which was used in the recipe below.
Blood Orange Old Fashioned
Ingredients
1.5 oz Sazerac Rye
1 oz Blood Orange Juice
1 Brown Sugar Cube
3-4 dashes Angostura Aromatic Bitters
1 large cube Ice
Method
Place brown sugar cube in an Old Fashioned glass.
Add 3-4 dashes of bitters and muddle, rotating the glass clockwise so that the sugar and bitters create a layer on the bottom of the glass.
Add large ice cube to glass. Pour in blood orange juice & rye whiskey and swirl gently with bar spoon.
Garnish with a blood orange slice, or wheel & sip away!
